We played games and did activities that children in colonial times did. We made a game using a stick and twine tied into a loop. We had fun trying to get the loop over the stick! We also played marbles, made chalk drawings and created paper finger puppets!
Today we were visited by the West of New Bern fire fighters! We learned that we need to call 911 and state our name, address and the nature of our emergency. We also learned that all families need a safe meeting place after leaving the home. A real celebrity even came too...Smokey the Bear! It was a blast going up into the fire truck and trying out the fire hose! We have learned all about forces and motion. We worked with partners to create sentences using at least 2 expert vocabulary words to describe forces and motion. We also conducted experiments with balls and matchbox cars observing what happens when they hit an obstacle. On Friday, September 30th we welcomed a new student who joined our class for the day...Chomper! Chomper went with our class to P.E., the cafeteria, and to the playground! He even took a nap on the blacktop! He watched us work and tried to join in. We all gave Chomper a BIG hug as we lined up for dismissal! What a day!
We made combinations to 10! Here students have 10 white and red two-sided counters. They shook them and dropped them onto their desks. Then they sorted the red chips from the white chips. Finally, we recorded the equation by writing each white and red addend to equal a sum of 10.
We have been practicing our Literacy Centers. These centers all have students actively practicing speaking, listening, reading and writing skills! We are conducting research, writing about what we have read, and are practicing making and spelling words.
